Centralized Auto Tag Remediation Using Lambda

The client is an enterprise AWS customer managing workloads across multiple business units and AWS accounts. As their cloud footprint expanded, enforcing governance...

[Overview] System Overview

The customer operates a multi-account AWS environment supporting diverse business workloads. Strong governance, cost control, and compliance were critical requirements. The organization needed an automated, scalable way to enforce tagging standards without increasing operational overhead.

[Strategy] Our Solution

[DESIGN] Architecture design

Lambda-tag-auto-remediation

[APPROACH] Execution model

##### Environment Setup

Created shared services account and IAM execution roles.

##### Cross-Account Access

Configured trusted IAM roles in all target accounts.

##### Discovery Logic

Implemented Resource Explorer and Tagging API fallback.

##### Remediation Engine

Applied mandatory tags using service-specific APIs.

##### Automation & Monitoring

Scheduled execution via EventBridge and enabled CloudWatch logging.

[RESULTS] Delivered scope

The account records scheduled cross-account tag discovery, remediation and centralized logging/reporting. It does not supply a measured compliance denominator, coverage inventory or operating window for a compliance percentage. Ongoing permissions, supported resource coverage and exceptions still need operating ownership.

[TOOLS] Technology Stack

Amazon EventBridge – Scheduled orchestration

AWS Lambda (Python 3.11) – Remediation logic

AWS STS – Secure cross-account access

AWS Resource Explorer – Primary discovery

Resource Groups Tagging API – Fallback discovery

Amazon S3 – Compliance reporting

Amazon CloudWatch – Logging and monitoring

AWS IAM - Role-based security

[ANTI-PATTERNS] What could have gone wrong

##### Benefits

Scheduled tag-policy checks and remediation.

Centralized governance with minimal operational overhead.

Secure, scalable cross-account architecture.

Improved cost allocation and FinOps reporting.

Audit-ready compliance evidence

[APPLICABILITY] Where this pattern applies

The solution enabled the customer to standardize tagging practices across their AWS Organization, significantly improving cost transparency, governance maturity, and audit readiness.

Automation reduced operational burden while ensuring consistent policy enforcement at scale.
